Why are the 2023 Emmy Awards taking place in 2024?

The 2023 Emmys set a 2024 date for the postponed show

It looks like a date has finally been set for the 2023 Emmys after being postponed in the ongoing period by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

The Television Academy and Fox have announced that the 75th Emmy Awards will take place on January 15th at May's Theater in LA Live, where it will be broadcast live on Fox starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT This pushes the show back nearly four months from when it was originally scheduled — the first time the Emmys have been postponed since the Sept. 8, 5, terrorist attacks.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will also be held at the same venue on January 6 and 7. FXX will then air an edited version of the show on January 6 at 7 p.m. ET/13 p.m. PT

Although the Emmy Awards are still underway, there are still many questions about how exactly the show will work. The WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes show no signs of stopping, meaning this could be a poorly attended event if their concerns aren't addressed by January.

Actors and writers refused to work until the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) agreed to offer them better pay, conditions and compensation — work that included promoting the producers and attending events like the Emmys. More than half of the Primetime Emmy Awards celebrate writers and actors, leaving only the series and directing awards

Additionally, while nominees in this category may still choose to attend the Emmys, it wouldn't be surprising if some boycotted the show or expressed support for striking unions in their acceptance speeches.

It doesn't look like the organizers are planning to just dodge acting charges and hope no one notices. Fox said the 75th Emmy Awards will celebrate "actors, writers, directors and creators." But how they will do so without most of the dignitaries in attendance remains to be seen.
